Lent Devotion Week 1

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave nor forsake you”. Deuteronomy 41:6 (NIV)

Last year, I received a very clear calling to “do more”. This was incredibly vague, and I was already pretty involved with my local church. I spent time with God praying with a specific focus. In a moment of frustration from a lack of clarity, I asked the most audacious thing I could think of: “God, are you calling me to go to seminary?” I received the most direct and clear response I have ever heard: “NO! You must be a layperson”.

During my discernment process, I realized I was being called to run as a delegate to Jurisdictional Conference, which made me nervous because that is a big commitment. When discussing this with my retired clergywoman mentor, she ended up telling me very directly “you are afraid and you are letting fear get in your way”. Yes, I was.

After reflecting upon this, I realized I needed to trust God more, listen better, and follow the path I was being called on. So, I submitted my paperwork, gave a 2 min speech during Annual Conference, and was elected as a Jurisdictional Delegate. The work I have been involved in since has been hard, but has been very fulfilling.

Fear is real. Fear leads us to believe lies that we are not worthy, we are not good enough, or maybe we don’t have the gifts and graces to do what we feel called to do. Fully trusting God is sometimes scary but it is an opportunity for faith to deepen. Where is God calling you to join in the work of love and grace?

“Fear, he is a liar

He will take your breath

Stop you in your steps

Fear, he is a liar

He will rob your rest

Steal your happiness

Cast your fear in the fire

‘Cause fear, he is a liar”

Chorus of “Fear” by Zach Williams
